Coho Spawner Surveys Document Continuing Decline
Surveys for spawning Coho salmon in the Lagunitas Creek watershed were conducted by biologists from the Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD), the National Park Service (NPS) and the Salmon Protection and Watershed Network (SPAWN) during the winter runs.

For the season, these biologists recorded 102 coho redds (gravel nests) in the watershed. MMWD biologists observed 32 redds in the main stem of Lagunitas Creek, 40 in San Geronimo Creek and six in Devil's Gulch. NPS biologists observed 22 coho redds in Olema Creek, while surveyors with SPAWN observed two redds in the tributaries to San Geronimo Creek.
While the coho run was larger than the disastrous runs of the previous two seasons, it was just over half the size of the previous generation, which spawned three years ago. Over the last ten years, about 270 coho redds per season have been observed on average, and this year's run will go down as the third smallest coho run recorded in the watershed.
On a positive note, nearly 70 percent of this season's redds were located out of the main stem of Lagunitas Creek and the eggs they contain are less likely to be washed away by floods.

Geography of Hope Conference
Field Trips Led by TBWC Leaders
Friday, March 18th
Depart from the Dance Palace at 1pm
Tomales Bay by Boat
Participants will board two boats provided by Dixon Marine in Inverness and explore Tomales Bay with retired Tomales Bay State Park Ranger Carlos Porrata. Joining him are noted fisheries expert Dr. Bud Abbott, Environmental Biologist, and Dr. Ted Grosholtz, UC Davis, Dept of Environmental Science and Policy, both of whom have studied the Bay extensively.
Black Mountain - A Bird's Eye View of the Watershed
Join Michael Mery, longtime West Marin resident and first chair of the Tomales Bay Watershed Council to climb this West Marin landmark which is protected by a Marin Agricultural Land Trust conservation easement. Take in spectacular views of the entire Tomales Bay Watershed. Dave Osborn and Mike Giammona run a grass-fed beef operation on the mountain. They'll meet climbers at the top to describe their business philosophy and practices. You might also meet a few of those grass-fed cows along the way.

Community Conversation #6
Local Food and Land Stewardship
Sunday, March 13th, 2011
4-6:30pm
Nicasio School
Some of us eat to live. Some of us live to eat. But we all eat. When we eat locally grown food we either know or can easily learn how that food was grown and how the way it was grown impacts the environment. The more we know about how the way food is grown impacts the environment, the better able we are to support and encourage environmentally-sound food production practices.
Community Conversation #6, "Local Food and Land Stewardship," will be an opportunity to talk with local agricultural producers and their resource partners about a variety of both historical and emerging examples of producer land stewardship.
