Chicken Ranch Beach Project Update
June 21, 2011
3:30-5:30pm
Red Barn Classroom
Come and learn about new opportunities for an expanded and improved project at Chicken Ranch Beach and adjacent lands. We will review the work to date, and look at a draft project concept for private and public lands, including Chicken Ranch Beach and adjacent parcels. In June 2010, the Tomales Bay Watershed Council released the "Draft Restoration Feasibility and Conceptual Design Report for Chicken Ranch Beach" prepared by the Kamman Hydrology & Engineering, Inc. (KHE) team. Many of you read and commented on this report, and we have integrated your comments and will present the revised project report later this summer. |

Water, Water Everywhere!
B-WET Exhibit at Toby's Gallery
June 3rd-June 30th, 2011
Gallery Route One's Artists in the Schools program is now in it's 18th year! This year's program culminates in the exhibition "Water, Water Everywhere (WWE)-Creeks, Bogs, Bays and Beaches of our Tomales Bay Watershed"
Gallery Route One Artists in the Schools (GRO-AIS) program staff are committed to art practice, art history and the applied arts. Environmental education is a guiding principle of our arts program. This past year, the GRO-AIS program offered an environmental arts education program that focused on the Tomales Bay Watershed through a partnership with the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s Bay Watershed Education and Training program (B-WET).
The West Marin B-WET, Outdoor Ed in the Watershed program works to build understanding of watershed processes, land use and the environmental impacts of our activities on our creeks, the Tomales Bay estuary and the greater marine environment. Classroom lessons and activities are used to build understanding and experience, which inform experiential field trips.
Participation by our program partners, in classroom activities and outdoor field trips help to deepen the students' experience and their relationship to the watershed. The Tomales Bay Watershed Council has contributed to a successful WMB-WET program by providing field instruction and guidance for students studying the creeks and wetlands in our 'backyard'.
The B-Wet program significantly increased the students' understanding of the water cycle, the Tomales Bay watershed as an ecosystem and its' resources and history. Finally, students contributed their data and findings to the body of scientific knowledge of the Tomales Bay shared by WMB-WET partnership organizations.
Please come out and see the work of this extraordinary program and of our local students! Click here for exibit poster. |
TBWC Hosts Local Beach
The Tomales Bay Watershed Council has created a new page on our website with current advisory conditions for local water recreation spots. We will update the page weekly as lab results are reported, please let your friends know how to see the current conditions:
www.tomalesbaywatershed.org/BeachWQ.shtml
From April 1-October 31st each year, the County of Marin Environmental Health Services conducts weekly monitoring at selected sites where water-contact recreation is common. This "beach" monitoring program provides advisories to the public when the results of bacteria testing indicates levels do not meet contact recreation standards. There are signs posted at sampling locations, and advisory signs are posted when warranted.
In an effort to provide this information to the public in a convenient and timely manner, the Tomales Bay Watershed Council will be maintaining this web-page to provide weekly notification of advisory conditions at local beaches throughout the 2011 season. The Advisory Table on the page shows the weekly advisory condition of each site.
Conditions will be updated weekly when lab results become available.
Please check the site for the most current advisory conditions, or call the County of Marin Beach WQ Hotline at 415-473-2335. |
Lagunitas Creek Stewardship
Plan Finalized
The Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) has finalized their stewardship plan for Lagunitas Creek and staff will be presenting this to the MMWD Board, as an informational item, at their regularly scheduled meeting next week (agenda available here):
MMWD Board Meeting
Wednesday, June 15, 2011 7:30 p.m.
220 Nellen Avenue
Corte Madera
The Staff report provides a summary of the comments received on the Draft Plan and revisions made to the plan in response to the comments. The staff report describes the approach we will be taking for environmental review and project approval, which is that it is a planning document we will utilize as a guide and the plan itself will not go through review under CEQA; as each action is developed further, the details will emerge and it will be appropriate to evaluate impacts at that time.
The final Stewardship Plan is available on the MMWD website at:

Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Workshop
Wednesday, June 22, 2011
9:00 am-3:00 pm
Marin County Health and Wellness Center
3240 Kerner Blvd, San Rafael
The North Bay Watershed Association (NBWA) is collaborating with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) in hosting a workshop for water management agencies and other interested stakeholders on the threats of AIS and protocols to reduce the potential for infections into regional water bodies.
Zebra and quagga mussels, New Zealand mud snails, and Chinese mitten crabs can infest water bodies in massive population booms, overwhelming native populations and destroying water management facilities. Once introduced, these species are virtually impossible to eradicate.

This workshop will include:
- A review of threats and costs from AIS infestations.
- Protocols for quagga/zebra mussel early detection and monitoring.
- Protocols for prevention of AIS introductions.
- Risk assessment and planning to reduce the risk of spreading AIS.
The workshop is intended to establish a program for all North Bay water resource management agencies and organizations to operate under consistent and uniform protocols for detection, prevention, response, and reporting of AIS. Managers, supervisors, and on-the-ground staff are encouraged to attend; your participation is vital.
Lunch will be Provided - Space is Limited
Please RSVP by June 15, 2011
